I began by selecting a scrapbook sketch that aligned with my theme, then gathered all the necessary materials. The Rugged Kit from {Not} Just for Boys was an ideal choice for my photos, plus the monthly challenge sketch provided a solid foundation for my design. With those decisions made, I proceeded to tweak the original sketch to make it my own. I am going to share some helpful pointers to consider when adding your own unique twist.

Don’t hesitate to deviate from the sketch to better suit your needs. On this project, I’ve replaced the three horizontal photos with two photos – a vertical and horizontal. While I still used the sketch as a reference for placement, I made adjustments to accommodate the orientation I had.

Adjusting the photo size and orientation is a simple way to make changes to a sketch. A vertical photo can take the place of two horizonal ones. You can also change a rectangle to a square shape or a circle. Simple alterations like this make your scrapbook page unique.

If you’re working with a black and white sketch, choosing a color scheme is simple. Just pick colors that match your photos and the story you want to tell. If your sketch is already colorized, you can easily change the color scheme to one that complements your photos.

To achieve a balanced color scheme, select patterned papers and embellishments that match or contrast with the colors in your design. On this layout, I chose a playful palette of primary colors that matched the girl and go cart in the photos.

If you want to add interest to your pages, try altering the straight lines of your sketch by adding angled or rounded pieces. To add movement to the page, I made my tags a little wonky and angled a few of the pattern papers in the background.

Additional lines can be added with stitching and twine. For even more pattern and texture, try incorporating stencils, paint, ink, and cut files, like I did. Simple changes like these personalize the design and reflect your unique style.

Most scrapbook sketches traditionally place the title on a horizontal axis, but why not mix things up a little? On this layout, I had designed a vertical flow with the larger photo and didn’t want to stray away from that, so I placed my title vertically on the left side of the page.

If you’re looking for even more ways to switch things up, consider altering the size of your title, adding subtitles, or even omitting the title entirely. Remember, the title of your page is unique to your story, so don’t be afraid to get creative and make the necessary changes to personalize your page.

In this video, I’ll share how the sketch inspired this awesome teen scrapbook page and how I put my own spin on the sketch with stencils, paint, ink, and cut files. Discover how simple it is to customize a scrapbook sketch as you bring your creativity into each design!

Remember that the goal of scrapbooking is to preserve your memories in a way that reflects your personal style and creativity. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with your pages. With the help of scrapbook sketches and your own personal touch, you can create beautiful and meaningful keepsakes that will be cherished for years to come.
