Tips & Tricks to Transform a Fall Scrapbook Kit

Have you ever fallen in love with a scrapbook kit, only to realize that you don’t have the ideal photos to match? Although most of this month’s themes revolve around fall, our family doesn’t take many autumn photos. Instead of setting this November Rain kit aside, I repurposed it into an all-occasion mixed-media scrapbook layout that suits a teenage girl’s style. In this video, I’ll show you some easy adjustments you can make to your kit to create something truly unique.

This lovely page of a teen girl preparing for a hip-hop production was created using the November Rain kit from {Not} Just for Boys Kit Club. This is an amazing collection filled with autumn hues and rustic patterns.

I find it best to start with paper patterns when I am modifying a kit. To create a distinctive non-traditional fall theme, I began with basic wood grain patterns. The page will have a slightly edgy and worn appearance, so I incorporated an industrial-looking circle with black texture paste with spatters of Rock-a-Fella Shimmerz Spritz.

By adding a touch of blue, which is not typically associated with fall, I was able to deviate from the traditional autumnal feel and create a versatile page suitable for any occasion.

The November Rain kit features a collection of papers with natural textures, playful prints, and artful patterns. The majority of these patterns have a masculine charm, with autumnal hues. The photos are neither masculine nor were they taken in the fall, so I opted for patterns that matched the personality of the girl instead of the season.

To add to the edgy worn feel, I added dark espresso ink to distress the edges of the paper. Adding darker ink, torn edges, and distressing is a simple way to make a more playful pattern, like the leaf one, have a more rugged or aged appearance. It’s also a great way to make whites appear less bright and change the clean look of pattern paper.

The clean fall aesthetic of the embellishment kit clashes with the edgy or worn feel of the page. To fix this, I carefully selected elements with less of a fall feel. Incorporating blue elements and adding ink to each piece achieved this.

Since the subject of the photo is wearing black, a few more colors can be incorporated, but fall colors were used in moderation. The leaf and floral pattern has hints of blue, tan, red, and orange, so I chose pieces that complemented the hues and the existing patterns.

Finding an appropriate title can be difficult. The autumn-themed Farmstead Harvest collection is filled with wonderful phrases for the season, but I needed something more generic. Using two phrases, I created a subtle title that perfectly complemented the page’s design.

In this short video tutorial, I will share a few more tips to help you modify the theme of your next scrapbook kit.

Despite the NJFB’s November Rain Kit’s rugged and fall-oriented feel, it’s still possible to find pieces that convey a non-fall memory and edgy personality. Don’t feel limited to autumnal photos only. You can easily modify the elements in this kit with distressing, ink, and texture to fit any memory or personality. As demonstrated, selecting specific pieces that match your page’s theme is a great way to get the most out of your kit.
