Unique Ways to Enhance Your Pattern Paper Pages

Since summertime is typically a prime time for travel, I wanted to share a fun page you can create to showcase your favorite memories using a printed pattern background. In this post, I am going to share some ways you can level up that printed paper and create truly unique and beautiful scrapbook pages.

Having a printed pattern, like this one from the {Not} Just for Boys Daydream Kit, accelerates the creative process. This print incorporates paper strips, printed stitching, and a stunning watercolor wash that would typically take hours to create. Printed patterns often lack dimensional appeal, so if you are looking to add more interest to your pattern paper here are a few techniques you can try.

Incorporate stitching. Adding stitching to a scrapbook page can be a great way to add texture and dimension to your layout. The circles on this page were stitched with traditional embroidery floss, but you could try using a thicker thread like baker’s twine or crochet thread for a different look.

If hand stitching isn’t your thing, there are other ways to achieve that stitched look. Consider using a sewing machine to create zig-zag patterns or straight stitches, as was done on these vertical strips. There are also plenty of stamps and dies available that offer stitched patterns which create a realistic sewing effect on your page.

Include stamped images. Stamping is a great way to add some creative flair to your scrapbook pages. Not only is it an easy and affordable way to add text, patterns, and designs, but it also offers endless possibilities for customization.

Stamps can be used to create borders, backgrounds, or focal points on your scrapbook page. On this layout, I added the phrase “love this” at the top of the page and the word “incredible” below the title to highlight this fun adventure.

Don’t be afraid to add color. Layer your paper with other patterned papers or die cuts and stickers to add depth and dimension to your scrapbook pages. To complement the two vertical strips, I added die cuts and ephemera in corresponding colors next to each photo.

I also sprinkled a few enamel dots and acrylic arrows throughout my page to create some additional layers of color and dimension. You can also add a splash of color using ink or paint with stenciling or splattering.

Add some distressing. Incorporate distressing techniques to give your paper a vintage or textured look with sandpaper, scissors, or a distressing tool.

On my layout, I used torn paper to create a textural frame for my project. Depending on the color and type of paper used, torn edges can give a rustic or vintage feel. To back my torn edges, I incorporated a mix of die cuts to create depth and interest.

Remember, the key is to experiment and have fun! Try combining different techniques or adding unexpected elements to your background to make it truly unique.
