If you have ever tried to create a stenciled design using a wet medium, you probably found out that it can be rather challenging. In this post, I will demonstrate the process I used to make a beautiful globe design with watercolors and offer some helpful pointers.

This page was created with components in the {Not} Just for Boys Daydream Limitless kit. This is a wonderful kit filled with bright summer prints from Heidi Swapp, Pinkfresh, Jen Hadfield, Reminisce, and Vicki Boutin.

Included in the kit are three stencils that pair perfectly with the pattern papers and ephemera. The NJFB group sets a monthly challenge for its members, and this month’s challenge is to incorporate stencils so I decided to feature the globe and script on this page.
Stenciling with watercolors can be challenging. If you have ever attempted to stencil with watercolor paints, you have probably had issues with the paint seeping under the stencil and causing a blurred image. The solution is a sponge.

I like to use a blender sponge, but a makeup sponge or sponge dauber can be just as effective. A sponge is a helpful tool that regulates the amount of color applied and prevents excess water from pooling over the images. This assists you in achieving a clean and well-defined design with your stencil.
The paint also dries much quicker, so that you can add additional layers of paint or another medium.

On my page, I added some script designed with a textured mouse. This brought a lovely pink color to the background with a little bit of shine.
In the process video that I have shared, I provide some extra tips to assist you in designing a watercolor pattern with stencils and share how this layout comes together.
The most important part of creating a watercolor pattern with stencils is to have fun. Don’t be afraid to try new techniques and experiment with different colors and designs as you let your creativity flow.
