I love finding new ways to use items in my collection. Stencils seem to be an item that multiplies in my space, and I struggle with mixed media, so I wanted to find a new way to use them. In today’s video, I share how I used a circle stencil to create stitching on this summer layout.
This layout was designed to share a story of my daughter when she was young. I have few photos of when our children were little, so I have decided to write those stories on current layouts, so they have the memories to treasure.
I created a little pocket on the layout using a seed packet die decorated with a card from the cut apart page and puffy stickers. I used another cut-part to create a tag where I wrote the story about the summers daddy would take her shopping and let her pick out sundresses in any color or pattern.
She would come home and model all the bright colors and frilly dresses as she twirled through the house. Being the only girl, this was a special day for her and she looked forward to it every summer.
I used photos of her wearing a sundress to tell the story and paired them with some bright patterns from Carta Bella. I chose a bright yellow perspextive for the title and added some bits of yellow, red, and blue to the design.
To create the illusion of a summer sun, I traced a concentric circle stencil using a piercing tool and added some stitching. This is a great way to use those stencils in your collection.
You can trace shapes, icons, and frames to make some lovely stitches on your pages. I chose to hand stitch mine, but you could also use a sewing machine if you have one. (that’s on my wishlist)

The little pops of red in the hearts and flowers bring focus to the photo while the lovely yellow title and tags give this a summer feel. The circle at the top is on of my favorites and I love how easy it was to make using the stencil.
