I had to take some time away, so it’s been a while since I have had a moment to record some memories. Today, I am documenting photos of my sons duck hunting along the river. Many of you requested masculine layouts after I shared the one of my son on the archery range, so I hope this one sparks your creative juices.
I don’t have many photos like this of my boys. I don’t go hunting, and men don’t always think about the mom at home who might want to scrapbook their memories. I am grateful that my husband snagged a few shots on their last outing.
The inspiration for this page came from a Pagemaps sketch. This website is full of free downloads and guides, and I love using them as a jumping-off point.
I kept the page simple with minimal embellishments. When you have busy photos where the subject is small or hidden, you don’t want to distract from the focus of the layout, which is the photos and the memories.
As much as you want to add all the delightful papers and ephemera to a page, the purpose of scrapbooking is to record a memory. When people look at your layout, they need to see those photos right away and admire the pretty additions after the fact.
I also chose colors that would complement the photos. With yellowing reeds, blue skies, and boys in hunting gear, I needed something that would draw your eyes to the photos.
A woodgrain background brought a masculine outdoor feel to the page, and the blue pattern paper complements the morning sky and yellow reeds.
The small bits of ephemera like the ducks, leaves, and acrylic shapes, convey the theme of the layout. The title I chose from Bramble Fox is one of my favorites. The minute it arrived in the mail, I knew I wanted to use it on this layout.

These are memories my boys will have for years to come. I know that there will be a day when their lives become too busy to spend time together near the river. These are moments I treasure, and I am grateful to my husband for capturing a few photos of their time together.
