Like many of you, I have a multitude of cut file titles that I like to use on my projects. Each one varies in design, but many of them only have an outlined phrase which, until now, I filled by hand with fussy cutting techniques.โ€‚Fortunately, I have discovered two new ways of filling a title cut file that will drastically change the way you approach cut files. I canโ€™t wait to share them with you.

The title design I am using was featured in a previous project. After uploading the digital design into Design Space, it’s essential to adjust the size to fill the canvas area. The tools we are using today do a much better job with a larger image than a smaller one.

Before diving into the filling process, you’ll want to ungroup the images and duplicate the outline cut file design.โ€‚The duplicated image will be used to create the fill for the title.โ€‚I find it best to move the duplicated image off to an empty area of the Canvas so that I can easily work with the design.

To distinguish the duplicated image from the original, change the material color. This will make it easier to see which file you are working with as you create the fills for your title.

Now it’s time to explore the two ways of filling a cut file title. Let’s begin with the Puzzle Piece Fill technique. Start by selecting the outline title image and tapping on the Contour icon located in the lower right corner.

If you are new to using the Contour tool, I have some additional tutorials that will explain how Contour works. You can view them here.โ€‚Contour is a tool that is designed to remove contours or cuts from an image.

In the Contour window, remove the main outline image and the inner portions of the letters. Select the images in the window or the cut list on the right to remove them from your design.

Did you know that the centers of letters are called counters? I just learned that term and itโ€™s much better than what I accidentally called the center of the “a” in one of my live videos.

Once you exit out of the contour window, the fill letters for your outlined title will appear on your canvas. Do not change the size of these or they will not fit inside your outline image.

Drag and drop these letters onto the outline, and they’ll fit perfectly like puzzle pieces. When you create your project, simply adhere them into the title outline.

If you’re looking to add an extra flare to your title, consider cutting out the letters from multiple colors. You can find the instructions for this type of title in the video below.

Now that you have learned a simple way to create a fill for your title cut files, let’s take a look at the Offset Overlap Fill method, which is perfect for those who want to raise their titles off the page. This method creates a fill that overlaps the back of the outline, creating a complete title piece.

For this method, we are going to use the Offset tool to create a layer that is large enough to layer behind the outline title. The Offset tool is located at the top of the Canvas. It is used to create both offsets and insets of your images. If you would like to learn more about this tool, I have multiple videos in my membership playlist.

After selecting the image, tap on the Offset icon. In the offset box, you can see a sizing box that shows the measurement of the offset. To create an offset for the title fill, type in the exact measurement you want for your offset. For most title fills, 0.050 is a good starting point, but you may need to experiment with each one.

At the base of this offset box are the corner styles. Choose one that matches your cut file. For instance, if your file is squared off, like this one, select that option.

Tap on apply to create the offset image. This image is slightly larger than the original letter images and will be labeled as ‘offset’ in the layers panel. If needed, change the material color of the offset layer to match the title you are creating.

When you bring this over to your outline title, it overlaps the outline slightly. This overlap can be adhered to your cut file image to create a complete one piece title.

If you feel like the overlap isnโ€™t enough, donโ€™t try to make them larger by resizing the pieces. This will cause some distortion to the fill pieces. Instead, you will need to select the original letter images, and use the offset tool to make them larger.

When all the layers for you title are complete, group the images together and size them to fit yourโ€‚project.
