Creativity gives you to flexibility to follow a set path of let your imagination take the lead. When I created this sketch design for the Hip Kit challenge, my original idea was to make a mixed media layout featuring paint swipes, stitching, and multiple paper layers. Unfortunately, due to some changes in my schedule, I didn’t have the time for layers of paint to dry. After some creative thinking, I opted to rotate the sketch and replace the stripes with floral patterns.

Inspired by the cues from the photo, particularly the tulle skirt, I aimed for an airy feel with a soft spring color palette. This also influenced me to introduce watercolors into the mix.

In the accompanying video, I demonstrate how I blended watercolor pigments to coordinate with the March Hip Kit collection. I was inspired by the collection of tags to create this soft color palette.

From past experience, I learned that it’s better to add watercolor to paper before cutting out intricate die cut designs. Applying watercolors afterwards causes the wet pigment to erase the detailed impressions from your dies.

I applied rows of paint on mixed media paper, allowed it to dry, then I proceeded to cut out the flowers using the floral die set.

My vision was to incorporating circular shapes from the sketch. The florals added a delicate design, so I opted for a circle overlay as the background. This complemented the soft florals and added an elegant touch to the page.

I placed the assembled flowers along the edge of the page to resemble the stripes in the sketch. I also added my title along the edge of the page.

To bring more circle shapes to my layout, I added viewmaster die cuts near my photo and title. These were layered with some additional florals, die cuts, and puffy stickers from the March Hip kits.

These deviations from the original plan lead to even more unexpected changes. In my video, I share how I altered the sketch to fit my vision and incorporated pieces that made this page unique.

Isn’t it fascinating how creating often results in something truly magical? Whether you’re participating in the Hip Kit challenge or embarking on a new creative pursuit, remember to welcome the unexpected with open arms. The beauty of art lies not in the destination but in the exploration and discovery along the way.

I hope this inspired you to try something new. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
