Scrapbooking is a great way to preserve memories and create a unique piece of art. While there are many ways to create a scrapbook page, one fun and simple technique is to use paper patterns and heat embossing to create a striking background. CREATE A BACKGROUND WITH BUSY PATTERNS

When designing a scrapbook layout, the first step is to select a few patterned papers for the background. The two patterns I chose would fill my page with fall colors, but I found them too busy to be used on their own.
Instead of setting them aside, I cut them apart and created a grid-like design on a dark blue background. This mix of rectangles and squares creates a simple, yet striking design.
CREATE A BACKGROUND WITH STITCHING

Scrapbook pages can be transformed with the addition of stitching. Whether it’s simple lines, creative zig-zags, or embroidery stitches, this technique is sure to elevate your layout to the next level.
On this scrapbook page, I incorporated lines of stitching. With a sewing machine, I created a frame with two straight lines at the top and bottom and zigzagging across the squares. These interesting elements produced a beautifully textured background.
CREATE A HEAT-EMBOSSED BACKGROUND

Heat embossing is a simple technique that can produce stunning background images. The subtle texture adds depth and dimension to your designs.
To achieve this classic look, I stamped a large leaf background on the navy cardstock and heat-embossed it in white. This created a beautiful frame around the photo and added a striking design element to the page.
CREATE A BACKGROUND WITH A LARGE TITLE

One way to make a statement with your scrapbook pages is with large titles on a background. You can craft these with die cuts, stickers, stamps, or chipboard pieces.
My page has an assortment of colors at the top, so I decided to use a white chipboard phrase as my title. This large piece blends seamlessly with heat-embossed images and adds weight to the base of the page.
CREATE DETAILS WITH MATCHING ELEMENTS

Once your background is created, choose items with identical hues. The embellishments should help tell the story and create a cohesive look on the page. This layout records a memory of the pumpkin patch, so I chose festive fall pieces in colors matching my background patterns. The hues are subtle like the background papers and don’t overpower the photo.
In the video below, you can learn how to incorporate each of these techniques into your next background design. By following these tips, you can create a unique scrapbook page that showcases your creativity and preserves your memories in a beautiful way.
I would love for you to try one of these techniques on your next scrapbook layout. It’s easy to enhance your page design by incorporating pattern paper, fun stitching, embossed images, chipboard elements, and embellishments into your background. Give it a try and see how it can transform your page.
