In June I have been challenged by the Best of 30 Days of Sketches The sketches in this series are designed for larger scrapbook pages, but I chose to use the sketch to create a card design for the Coffee Loving Card Maker blog. In my video, I show how I scaled down the sketch and created this sweet quilt card with the pleated border.
I was inspired by the block design in the sketch which reminded me of the scrap quilts my grandmother made. She enjoyed her daily coffee and spent some of her time creating blankets from older dresses, curtains, and bits of leftover fabric.
The one I have in my home has a beautiful yellow ruffle around the edges. She loved bright colors and patterns so I chose to mimic both those features when I created my card using some lovely patterns from Echo Park.
The box pleats were created from two strips of paper cut at 1½” wide. I used my paper trimmer and a scoring tool to score lines at 1”, 1¼”, 2”, 2¼”, 3”, 3¼”, 4”, 4¼” and so forth to the end of the paper strips.
I folded the paper strips on the score lines by folding the first score back and the second forward, and then the third score was folded forward and the fourth folded back to create those box pleats. I adhered the two strips together to create a seven-inch border.
Once the papers were stitched in place and the border adhered, I added a few coffee elements. I created a bright yellow coffee cup to match the border and a simple heat embossed sentiment.
