Create a Birthday Card with the New Space Adventure Collection

Birthday cards are an essential part of any card makers stash, and finding versitle collections to create them can make all the difference. The new Spellbinders Space Adventure Collection by Simon Hurley is the perfect addition to your creative arsenal. With its celestial themes and intricate dies, you can create unique cards for countless occasions.

I was honored to be asked to create some simple cards with Simon’s new collection and it has been such a fun set of dies to work with. For this project, I used a mix of Distress Oxide inks and the UFO Friend Etched Dies to craft a vibrant, out-of-this-world birthday card. The starry background, colorful planets, and whimsical sentiment come together to create a galactic design perfect for any space enthusiast.

To achieve the night-sky effect, I blended Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot Distress Oxide inks across a slimline card base. The key to a smooth blend is starting with light pressure and gradually building up layers of ink. I recommend using a circular motion with a blending tool and slightly overlapping each color to avoid harsh lines. To soften transitions, you can go back over the blended area with the lighter color.

To enhance the celestial feel, I layered stars using the Starry Night stencil and white pigment ink. Next, I added splatters of white shimmer and paint to create the illusion of distant stars. A small paintbrush or a splatter brush works best for controlled but random spots.

The planets were created with the UFO Friend Etched Dies and a variety of Distress Oxide colors such as Squeezed Lemonade, Mermaid Lagoon, Saltwater Taffy, and Seedless Preserves. Each planetโ€™s unique look comes from taking advantage of Distress Oxideโ€™s water-reactive properties.

After blending ink colors onto the die-cut shapes, I spritzed them lightly with water using a fine mist spray bottle. This caused the ink to react and lift slightly, leaving behind soft, textured spots that add dimension and interest. For added effect, I dabbed a paper towel onto the wet areas to create even more variation. Once the ink dried, I assembled the planetary rings and arranged them in a playful row across the card.

For the sentiment, I die-cut “Happy Birthday Earthling” using a silver cardstock for a metallic finish that complements the space theme. These words tie the card together, adding a whimsical and celebratory message.

The combination of these techniques and tools makes this card a joy to create. If you are looking for a new birthday collection, the Simon Hurley’s Space Adventure offers endless possibilities for creativity!
