Do you enjoy working with pattern papers, but often feel overwhelmed by the bold patterns and prints? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Many crafters find themselves attracted to the vibrant designs but unsure how to incorporate them into their projects without feeling overwhelmed. In the video today, I’ll be sharing some of my pattern paper tips and show you how to create a perfectly balanced design.

For this beach-themed scrapbook layout I used the Seaside Escape collection from {Not} Just for Boys Kit Club. The kit is packed full of summer patterns and prints from Echo Park, 49 & Market, and Cocoa Vanilla. With so many bold patterns to chose from, I needed to find a way to make my photo the focal point of the page. Let me share how I achieved this with the patterns in the kit.

With bolder patterns, it’s best to start small. Instead of large chunks of patterns, I used small strips of color behind my photo with a small amount of mixed media. This allows the pattern to stand out without dominating the entire piece.

Layering is also a great way to manage bold prints. On this layout, I used a more neutral background and layered the patterns in a way to draw attention to the focal point photo.
I’ve found that a limited color palette works well with bold patterns and creates a cohesive look. For this design, I decided to incorporate blue, red, and yellow hues with neutral tan tones.

For the title, I layered a mix of blue, red, yellow, and tan stickers from the Echo Park collection with chipboard words and phrases from 49 & Market. The softer hues of the chipboard pieces did a wonderful job softening the vibrant colors.
Behind my photo, I layered two of the 4×4 journal cards. More often than not, I use cut apart pages as photo frames or accents. The soft sand color matched the photo perfectly and the yellow frame piece helped lead the eye across the page.

To bring some texture to my design, I added a small amount of texture paste and stitching. These break up the pattern papers and lead the eye to the photo.
n today’s video, I share more tips that will help you when you are working with patterns papers. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting out, these suggestions will enhance your projects and make your creative process smoother.
By following these tips, you can confidently use bold pattern papers to enhance your creative projects without feeling overwhelmed. Experiment with different combinations and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes, the most unexpected pairings can turn out to be the most striking.
