Are you ready to try something new? Today I’m sharing a project that combines two of my favorite hobbies – card making and embroidery! If you’ve ever wanted to try stitching on paper, this beginner-friendly project is a great place to start.
I have always wanted to share a fun way to combine hand stitching with paper crafts. Using the the Hoop & Stitch Die Plate from Hip Kit Club, I created three sweet little cards. In today’s tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to stitch a cute sunshine design and turn it into a handmade card. I also have two bonus patterns that you can use with this same die set!
SUPPLIES | Embroidery Hoop Metal Die, Applique Flower Metal Die, Pocket Life Cards and Ephemera Shapes, April 2025 Cardstock Kit, April 2025 Embellishment Kit, White Cardstock, Embroidery Floss, Embroidery Wax, Embroidery Needle, Glassboard, Glassboard Magnets, P6 Die Cut Machine, Scout Die Cut Machine, Magic Mat, Craft Knife, Fine Point Scissors, Edge Distresser, T-Ruler, Die Lifter Tool, Foam Adhesive Sheets, Skinny Foam Tape, Mint Tape, Artis Glue, Tape Runner
I started with a cheerful little sun design stitched with yellow and orange floss. The hoop die creates the perfect frame, and I layered it over a cloud-print paper from the Hip Kit 6×8 collection. I added a sentiment strip and a sweet little bow to pull it all together. It just makes me smile!
If you’ve never stitched on paper before, don’t worry! This project includes step-by-step instructions, helpful embroidery tips, and a free downloadable pattern to get you started. Here are a few simple steps I from the video:
- Start with 12–18 inches of floss and separate it into 3 strands (4 if you want a bit more pop).
- Run your floss through embroidery wax — this helps prevent fraying and makes stitching through cardstock much smoother.
- Thread your needle and bring it up through the bottom left hole of your first stitch.
- Don’t tie a knot — just leave a 1-inch tail on the back and tape it down with clear tape.
- Cross stitch by going bottom left to top right, and then back bottom right to top left.
- Always keep your stitches consistent — same direction on the bottom, opposite on top!
- Try not to drag thread across the back of your project. Keep stitches short and neat so they don’t show through the holes.
And remember: stitching on paper is different from fabric. The holes are larger, and paper is more fragile. But with a gentle hand and a little patience, it turns out beautifully!
I created two additional embroidery designs for you to try with the Hoop & Stitch Die. These are perfect for cards, but you could also use them on scrapbook pages, tags, or gifts.
The butterfly design was a bit more detailed, but I loved how it turned out. I stitched the entire background in white floss to make it feel more like a fabric embroidery piece. Then I layered patterned paper behind it, added a puffy sentiment, and finished it off with a little pin embellishment.
To make things even easier, I’ve put together a FREE pattern download just for you. All you have to do is sign up for my newsletter, and I’ll send it right to your inbox! You’ll find the link below.
