If you’ve been crafting for a while, chances are you’ve got a growing stash of paper scraps. As card makers and scrapbookers, we never want to waste pretty paper, but figuring out how to store all those bits and pieces can be a challenge. What size scraps should you keep? Where should you store them? And how do you keep them organized so they’re actually useful?
In this post, I’m sharing my favorite tips for organizing paper scraps so they don’t overwhelm your workspace. My hope is that you’ll be inspired to use them more often!
The first challenge is deciding what size paper scrap to keep. This really depends on the type of crafting you do. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s what works for me.
💡 Tip: If you find yourself never reaching for tiny scraps, it might be time to let them go or punch them into shapes for future use.
I’ve tested a few different systems over the years, and here’s what I’ve found works best for my craft room size and crafting habits.
I store my scraps in large 12″ plastic envelopes right alongside my full-size patterned papers in 12×12 paper boxes. This system keeps all the coordinating pieces together, and it’s super easy to flip through when I need inspiration. It’s also great for those who have a large storage spaces with plenty of shelf space.
If you’re short on space or you like to take your paper crafting supplies on the go, I have a few other options to consider.
If you’ve got extra die or stamp sleeves, these are great for paper scrap storage. Label them by color or pattern and keep them in a bin near your work table. If you love portability, zipper pouches are a must! Use them to store scraps for specific projects or kits. Bonus: they’re great for crops and retreats!
Smaller envelopes are available in multiple sizes. These are great for desk drawers, tote bags, or vertical storage. Clear ones let you see what’s inside instantly.
Envelope storage boxes come in a variety of sizes and help you save on storage space. These work well if you store your paper scraps like books on a shelf. You can keep things visible and organized by theme or color.
Photo storage boxes are perfect for organizing smaller scraps or extra die cut pieces. Many of these come with removable inner cases, making them great for sorting scraps and easily grabbing what you need.
Scrap storage doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to work for you. Start small! Pick one method and test it out with a few scraps. Before you know it, you’ll have a scrap storage system that fits your crafting style and your space perfectly. The goal is to make your scraps easy to find and inspiring to use.
