Simple Watercolor Card Techniques

Today’s card making project will inspire you to pull out your watercolors! I can’t wait to l show you just how easy it is to create with a few die-cuts and simple painting techniques.

I’m featuring a few favorites from Trinity Stamps. This handmade friend card is full of delicate details, and it can be customized it for birthdays, thank-you notes, or even Mother’s Day! Versatile designs make it so easy to create beautiful cards that feel extra special.

Techniques like partial die-cutting and layered sentiments can really elevate a card. This project is a simple design that allows you to create something truly special.

When creating a watercolor background, I like to use a wet-on-wet technique because it lets the colors blend beautifully without much effort. Start by lightly spritzing the paper with water, then brush soft washes of shimmering blue, green, and violet. Don’t overthink the placement—just let it flow! If things look too bold, give it another spritz of water — it softens everything into a dreamy background.

Once it’s dry, add a few gentle splatters of white acrylic paint for texture. It’s an easy trick that gives your card a whimsical, airy feel!

Using the Garden Flowers dies, I created a partial cut frame along the edges. A helpful tip is to place the top cutting plate just where you want the die to stop cutting, then trim the edges cleanly with a ruler and craft knife. Layer your floral frame over the watercolor background with foam tape for some extra dimension. The shadows from the popped-up frame add so much interest!

The sentiment is a layered die-cut from the Simply Sentimental Friend set, with a heat-embossed strip tucked underneath. A vellum butterfly and a few pearlescent hearts tucked into the flowers give this card a soft, elegant finish.

One of my favorite things about this card layout is how versatile it is! Here are a few ideas to change it up:

  • Mother’s Day Card: Swap the “friend” sentiment for a “Mom” or “Mother’s Day” greeting.
  • Birthday Card: Use bright pinks, oranges, or yellows for the watercolor background and add a fun birthday sentiment.
  • Thank You Card: A simple “thanks” or “thank you” in the center would turn this into a beautiful appreciation card.
  • Wedding or Anniversary Card: Try a soft ivory and blush color palette with gold splatters for an elegant look.
  • Mini Slimline Design: Shrink down the floral frame and create a smaller slimline version for an extra trendy feel!

I love when a single technique opens up a whole world of possibilities! I hope this easy watercolor floral card project inspires you to pull out your paints and give these simple techniques a try. Whether you’re making a sweet friend card or switching it up for another occasion, you’ll love how quick and relaxing this cardmaking process is.
