As a novice in mixed media, I understand the challenges and unpredictability that can come with it. Over the past year, I’ve picked up some simplified techniques that have helped me create scrapbook layouts with more control and ease. In the accompanying video, I’ll share some of my favorites and how simple they are to replicate.
I’m excited to share a beautiful and vibrant scrapbook page featuring a delightful photo. This page was crafted using the fabulous March Hip Kits. Although the page looks rather complicated, it hardly took any time to create.

To start, I focused on making an eye-catching yet manageable background. Instead of stamping directly onto the cardstock, I used a creative twist: I mixed ink and water on a piece of acetate and lifted the watered pigment onto a brush stroke stamp.
This technique allowed me to achieve a soft, watercolor brush effect while maintaining the precision of stamping. The result is a beautifully textured background that looks like brush watercolor paint but with more control.
I added dimension by layering star images. I began by blending a mix of rainbow ink colors from Catherine Pooler over a piece of cardstock. These inks are water-reactive, so I sprayed a bit of water over the top to soften them and add some texture.
After the ink dried, I cut out the star background using a die, which I then layered over the painted background. This created a textured look similar to a stencil background but was much simpler to achieve.
To add more interest without bulk, I incorporated rub-on transfer images. These transfers are incredibly easy to use and can be layered over other mediums seamlessly. They also help keep the layout thinner compared to traditional die cuts.
For the finishing touches, I added a few chipboard and foam sticker pieces with phrases and flowers. To avoid adding too much bulk, I shared a handy tip in the video: peeling off the foam or chipboard layers to make them thinner. This way, you can still enjoy the dimensional look without the extra thickness.
