Scrapbook sketches provide inspiration and make memory-keeping easier. These tools are wonderful to have, but sometimes they need to be altered to fit the photo or theme you are working with. Today, I am going to share a few ways that you can alter scrapbook sketches.
This layout was created for the Hip Kit monthly challenge. The sketch shows swishes of paint in the background, a line of florals on the left, a small photo, and a large title.
The concept of multi-colored lines in the background is always fun to create, but I chose pattern paper over paint. I layered strips of blue, green, and grey florals then added stitching in between each strip.
The lines in the sketch extended under the photo to the opposite side. The pattern papers and photo are both soft in color, which required a need for a bold frame to help the photo stand out.
I chose to create one with a slimline card background in bold blue. This really made that photo stand out and created a smooth transition between the soft colors and vivid florals.
The floral placement is similar to the sketch and creates a lovely vertical line along the left side of the page. I layered quite a few chipboard pieces together to create dimension on my page.
When I use florals, I want to create a balance of color, texture, and shape. These have a mix of vellum and chipboard pieces that vary in shape. The addition of black leaves creates contrast and framed the edge of the page.
The photo for my page was larger and rectangular in shape so I needed to use a smaller title. I find that many sketches use smaller photos. Sometimes I want to use a larger photo, so I make a few alterations to balance out the page.
I was inspired by the butterflies in the sketch, so I added one near the title in the same bold blue as the frame. I like how this finished off the page.

Making changes to the background elements, photo frames, photo size, and title are just a few ways that you can alter a sketch. If you are inspired by a design, don’t be afraid to make a few changes to fit your project.
