Boys Best Friend Challenge with Scrap the Boys

Capturing photos of my boys is a rare thing, but when I do, I love being able to showcase them on a layout. This month’s Scrap the Boys theme is A Boys Best Friend, and I had some great photos of our son fishing with a dog by his side that were perfect for this challenge.

SUPPLIES | Glassboard, Photo Printer, Sewing Machine, Canva, Pink Fresh Pattern Paper, Pink Fresh Puffy Sticker, Pink Fresh Cardstock Sticker, Pink Fresh Cardstock Frames, 49 & Market In the Leaves, Lakeside Bits & Pieces, Lakeside Sticker Book, Lakeside Foam Stickers, Lakeside Brads, Beautiful Things Stamp, Splash Stencil, Woodie Leaf, Jute Twine, Frayed Burlap Ink, Foam Blender Tool, Pink Waterbrush, Waterbrush, Sanding Block, Spray Bottle, T-Ruler, Die Release Tool, Foam Dots, Skinny Foam Tape, Glue Dots, Bearly Art Glue, Tape Runner

This page has a grid design, which I feel is one of the easier ways to add multiple photos to a layout. I chose a vertical flow down the page with three photos and used bits of ephemera to help tell the story.

Adding pieces to each layout section is much like layering pieces onto a card front. I start with a base, add some larger foundation pieces, then decorate it with smaller accents.

To create cohesiveness amongst the grid, I add items of like color, shape, size, and pattern. In each part of the grid, there are leaves and trees, fish icons, frame and circle shapes, and hues of green, blue, and brown.

Repetition doesn’t necessarily mean identical. In one portion of the page, a circle shape is blue with a camera, in another area it’s a green arc, and in the third space, the circle is tan in color with leaves. The shape is repeated, but the elements vary.

A repetition of items will also lead the eye to the focal points of the layout. On this page, the large dark green items lead your eye to the base of the page where the story lies.

Not only is a variety of shapes and colors important, but so is texture. Adding bits of twine, stitching, brads, or wood elements breaks up the space and creates contrast.

In my process video, I share how I chose the elements for this grid page and show you a simple way to create that mixed-media background.

These photos of my boy and his pup are some of my favorites and I love how this layout makes them the focal point of the page.   All the elements create a wonderful backdrop for these photos and they came together quickly on this grid design.

I hope this project inspired you to join the February Scrap the Boys challenge. If you have any questions about this page or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
