Creative Ways to Use Specialty Paper

Our Creative Design Team has another video collab for you!  This time, we are showing you creative ways to use specialty papers like vellum, holographic paper, and foil papers.  For those of you who are new to our Creative Design Team, you will want to make sure to visit some of our past project videos. Each month, we add videos to our YouTube channels and blogs for you to enjoy.

This month’s theme was Specialty Papers.  I had such a hard time deciding which paper to use and focus on, so, instead, I chose to focus on a Cricut tool that I have been wanting to try.  A few months back, I purchased the Cricut Debossing Tool for my new Maker and I was so excited to use it for the first time for our video collab on our specialty papers.

This tool is part of the Maker’s Quick Swap Housing line of tools.  It works like an embossing folder creating debossed lines and images in your papers. You can choose to create small images, decorative lines, or emboss portions of your project. You can even turn images you already own into debossed images.

In my video below, I show you how I used cards from various CTMH Cricut collections and changed the design to create debossed card fronts using vellum, holographic paper, and foil paper.  The video shows you how to make your own in Design Space and how to assemble each of the four cards.

Please take a few minutes to subscribe to my channel so that you don’t miss out on any future Creative Design Team collabs.

I know that quite a few of you like to see the details on each of my projects and many like to “Pin” them to your boards for inspiration, so I am going to show you a few up-close photos and tell you a little more about each of the cards I made today.

The first card is one that is not part of my usual creative style, but I thought that I would give these colors a try.  I used a card design from our Complete Creativity Collection and used the debossing tool on vellum.

The debossing is very subtle and faint on vellum. I tried a few other settings on the Maker to increase the debossing pressure, but each one tore the vellum, so I may be experimenting a little more with this one.

This next card reminds me of a breezy beach scene.  The etched blue Oasis Holographic paper pairs so well with the vellum flower, the fern leaves, and the seashell sequins. This card design comes from our Everyday Moments collection.

This card originally had a stained glass look with all off those shapes filled with color. I chose to deboss those shapes onto some Holographic paper and add some vellum accents.  After putting the card together, I decided to snag a few seashell sequins from my stash and add the to the layers.

This third card has such a classic art deco feel with its embossed Silver Foil and mosaic pattern.  This design was also taken from our Everyday Moments collection and altered to become an embossed pattern.

After debossing the Silver Foil paper, I added some silver embellishing thread, the intricate sentiment, a black & white bow and an acrylic heart. I kept the embellishments on this card simple so that you could see all those intricately embossed elements.

The fourth and final card was so simple to make and looks just darling in person. The card design comes from the Artfully Sent collection and was originally designed as a card front with cut-outs.  In the video I show you how to use the slice tool and line-type to change it to a debossed design.

The butterflies were debossed onto White Daisy cardstock then topped with Holographic butterflies.  The sentiment was stamped onto vellum using the A Million Little Things stamp set, then heat embossed.

I hope today’s projects inspired you to try the Cricut debossing tool with our specialty papers. Make sure to stop by each one of the Creative Design Teams channels and check out all of their amazing creations.

Create a Vivid Valentine Card

for the Color My Heart Color Dare Challenge

After almost a month away, I am back in my creative space developing paper crafts for the Color My Heart Color Dare Design Team. This week, we are playing with the Celebrate Today papers and asking you to use the colors in this Tic-Tac-Toe color palette to create something for the challenge.

On my Vivid Valentine Card, I chose to use the colors on the top row – Raspberry, Lagoon, & Ballerina – with an added color that I have NEVER used – Nectarine.  To be honest, I am not  an “orange or yellow” person. That color is not in my wardrobe, in my home, or in my crafts, but, today, I decided to give it a try and I really like it

As you can see, I used the Nectarine color sparingly.  I was extremely nervous when I first pulled the flower off the Celebrate Today sticker sheet.  This is not a color I am comfortable with, and I wasn’t quite sure how well it would fit into my design, but, after the leaves were removed, I was delightfully surprised

The flower wasn’t the only element I altered for this card. The sentiment was a “love it” banner on the sheet Celebrate Today Vellum Die Cuts.  By simply cutting off the word “it”, covering what was left, and adhering it to my paper, you would have never known what the initial design looked like (unless you are looking really closely).

The letter “U” was also modified to match the design of the card. These Foam Alphabet Letters are white and easy to color with inks, markers, and Shimmer Brushes – like I did here.  I will warn you: they need time to dry and it helps to add a clear coat of Liquid Glass over the color if it doesn’t completely set, otherwise, the color will rub off the letter onto your project. (Don’t ask me how I know. It wasn’t pretty.)

Once all the elements were placed onto the card, I took a step back and decided to add even more Nectarine. Can you believe it?  I cut a small floral strip from the Mix-Ins paper pack and found a little piece of ribbon in my stash that matched perfectly.  Close to My Heart knew what they were doing when they designed the Celebrate Today products – all the colors coordinate beautifully.

I hope that today’s project has inspired you to try something new – like Nectarine – and join us for the Color My Heart Color Dare challenge. You do not have to use the Celebrate Today papers, but if you like them as much as I do, you will want to snag them before they retire at the end of February.  These papers, stickers, and die cuts can be found on my website and are available while supplies last

Today is a New Adventure in Scrapbooking

Here is something that not many people know.  Creating scrapbook pages is REALLY HARD for me.  Kits? Kits are easy.  I can “throw” together a few faceless pages any day, but pages with my own personal photos…those can leave me in tears.  In fact, I have avoided scrapbooking for over fifteen years because of this,  but today – – – – today is a new adventureMissCarriesCreations-TodayHuntingAdventureLayoutI made it a personal goal this year to start scrapbooking my own photos. FIFTEEN YEARS worth of photos. That can be quite the overwhelming task, so I am starting where I am with the ones I love most and getting them done just a little at a time. Since it is National Scrapbooking Month, I thought I would share one of the layouts I have been working on.  I have also decided to share this layout on the Heart2Heart NSM Challenge.

On this project, I am using some of my favorite papersThe World is Yours and Into the Wild. Both of these paper suites, along with their Stickers & Complements, helped me to create a beautiful backdrop for this amazing photo my husband took of our son.  You can see that I did quite a bit of layering with the paper, vellum snowflakes, and images.  I even took a few “Stars” from the Into the Wild Cut-Apart-Page and turned them into little stitched circle snowflakes.

I only shed a few tears as I created it, but that is because this boy (man really) reminds me of someone we lost and so many things that I tried to forget and now I get to relive the good memories again. MissCarriesCreations-TodayHuntingAdventureLayoutDetail

It took me a little longer than I hoped, but I was able to complete a full two-page layout with photos. I am realizing that it’s going to take me some time to get back into the “grove” of scrapbooking and to figure out my “scrapbooking-style”.MissCarriesCreations-TodayHuntingAdventureFullLayout.jpg

I will need to sit down and journal the memories on this layout. After all, that is the most important part of the page – the story behind the photos. We all have a story we need to tell, and today, you were able to hear some of mine.

Don’t forget to stop by my website and order your The World Is Yours paper pack before it retires on May 31st. I have used these papers for quite a few of my projects recently and am loving the versatility of all the patterns.

I can’t wait to see what you create!
