You’re My Person – Color My Heart Color Dare Card

This week at Color My Heart Color Dare, we are challenging you to create a project using only Black, White, and one accent color. For me, this meant getting ahead (for once) and creating a Valentine card. Before I start explaining my project, I want to give you a little inspiration for colors that go well with Black so I created a little “Board of Color” for you.

Are the wheels in your brain turning yet? I found these photos and others on Home Did It where you will find almost twenty color combinations to use as inspiration for this challenge. Since I was creating a Valentine’s Day card, I chose to use Candy Apple as my accent color.

I know that this is a very “typical” Valentine color palette, but, honestly, I love all the patterns and textures that play so well together on this card. If you would like to recreate this card for “your person”, I have listed a few tips & techniques for you to read.

The background for this card was created cutting Candy Apple cardstock with a    Stitched Rectangle frame, then backed with Heart Happy paper.

The layered papers came from our Something Fierce and Mix-Ins paper packs. I was unable to find a third pattern that I liked, so I stamped the “Arrows” onto White Daisy cardstock using the Border Melody stamp set, then splattered it with a Black Shimmer Brush.

♥ I wanted to keep my sentiment simple, so I cut a square using the Stitched Square Frames, stamped the A Piece of My Heart sentiments using VersaMark Ink and heat embossed using White Embossing Powder.  I always love adding whimsical layers so I attached that cute Heart Clip on the side.

My flower was a leftover from the Frame-It-Up kits I created. I chose not to add the Rose Gold center, but, instead, added Red Pearls.  If you aren’t lucky enough to have some of these in your stash, you can use a Carmine Marker, and color White Pearls.

After adding some Candy Apple Striped & White & Gold Skinny  ribbons and a few Gold Glitter Gems, the card was complete. I hope you are inspired by this card to join us for this month’s Color My Heart Color Dare.  I can’t wait to see what you create!

Magnolia Frame-It-Up Seasonal Wreath

Call me crazy, but I take pleasure in a piece of Home Decor that I can change each season.  Maybe it’s the creator in me or the indecisive hormones, nonetheless, having the ability to change my home decor intermittently is something I enjoy.  This week, I decided to create a simple wreath that I can change throughout the year using the components from the Magnolia Frame-It-Up kit.  This simple project is something you can easily recreate for your home.

My wreath base was cut at 11″ in diameter and  1½ wide from a piece of Foam Board, then wrapped it with Cotton Twine. By creating it from Foam Board, the wreath can be hung on a hook flush with the frame. After assembling the base, I began working on the leaves and flowers.  Since Magnolia leaves are naturally glossy, I used a foam brush to paint the front and back of each of the paper leaves in the kit with Gloss Mod Podge.  If you are not a fan of Mod Podge, you can use our Liquid Glass to achieve the same effect.(I happened to be out when I made this.)

The Magnolia Flowers in the kit have a grey center, but since my home has Americana decor, and I wanted to bring some red into my flowers. As I contemplated what shade of red to use, I thought,”Why not add glitter?”, (you can never have enough glitter) so I grabbed my Red Shimmer Brush and brushed the center of each flower.

The gold center of each flower is beautifully designed, but I felt like it could use “a little more” so I added some Gold Pearls. This product is currently retired, but you could either paint our White Pearls with a Gold Marker, or use some of our Gold Gems instead. (If you would like instructions for creating ‘realistic’ flowers, sign-up for my online Frame-it-up class on Facebook.)

Assembling the wreath was very simple. The leaves were glued directly to the Cotton Twine around the wreath base and the flowers were attached using Foam Dots. I punched out a few of the “Gold Twigs” from the kit and glued them randomly around the flowers and hung the wreath onto the frame.

This was a very simple project and one that I can’t wait to display in my home. My plan is to show you the additional wreaths as I build them through the year. If you choose to create this Magnolia Frame-It-Up Wreath, make sure to sign-up for my newsletter so that you can see the other wreaths. I can’t wait to see what you create!
