A Bestie Card with a Watercolor Embossed Background

Last week, I created a tutorial showing you how to use our Flower Garden embossing folder to make an inked embossed background. This week, I am going to show you another way to use the same embossing folder to create another type of background for your projects – one that uses our Watercolor Paints to create a one-of-a-kind look. MissCarriesCreations-MyBestieWatercolorCard

This Bestie Card was simple to create using using our May stamp of the month and the embossed background technique I am going to show you.  This stamp set is only available during the month of May and is the inspiration for the Besties with H2H challenge. If you would like to recreate this card, there is also a complete list of supplies I used at the very bottom of this post.

My background consists of a piece of Cold Pressed Watercolor paper that I dry embossed with our Flower Garden embossing folder.  I prefer to brush the watercolor paper with water first, but some people prefer to paint directly on dry paper.

So what’s the difference???  When you apply wet paint to dry paper you will have more control and more of a defined edge when shading your images. The paint only goes where your brush goes and the color soaks directly into the paper.

When you apply wet paint to wet paper, you achieve more of a washed effect. You do have a little less control of where the paint goes, but it is a little easier to remove mistakes before they completely soak into the paper. This is the method I prefer because I can easily clean up my mistakes before they set into the paper.

As you can see, by painting onto wet paper, my paint is a bit more opaque and it flows onto the raised images very easily.  I was able to shade each of the raised images on the paper using a small brush with various watercolor paints.  This technique is a simple way to create your own personalized background using an embossing folder.

The rest of the card was very easy to assemble.  I stamped the Besties image onto some Vellum paper with Black Ink, heat embossed the image with Clear Embossing powder, then shaded the back of the Vellum using ShinHan Markers.

I adhered the Vellum onto a White Rectangle Stitched Frame then layered the frame onto that beautiful Embossed Watercolor background using Foam Tape. I love how that little Bee from the Sweet Girl Complements goes so well with the flower images and sapphire matting. MissCarriesCreations-MyBestieWatercolorCardUpClose.jpg

I hope that you take the time try this technique and create a unique background for your own paper crafting project. Don’t forget, the To My Bestie stamp set is only available through May 31st. This means that you only have a few more days to add this stamp set to your collection for only $5.00 with any qualifying $50 purchase.

I can’t wait to see what you create!

To My Bestie ~ May SOTM Blog Hop

Welcome to the To My Bestie Stamp of the Month Blog Hop where we will be featuring the April To My Bestie stamp set. MissCarriesCreations-BestiesBlogHopLogoIf you have come here from Michelle Stewart’s blog, you are on the right path!  When you are finished reading my post, you can click on the link at the end to move to the next blog. This blog hop is simple, fun, and full of artwork created by some very talented consultants.  If you get lost along the way, you’ll find the complete list of participating consultants on Melinda’s Blog.

As I prepared for this blog hop, I wanted to create something memorable that you could give as a gift to your “bestie”. With all of the new Seasonal Expressions Two products to choose from, it was difficult to decide what to make.  Instead of going “overboard”, I decided to stick with a personalized gift, a Bestie Bookmark, that is sure to bring a smile to your best friend’s heart. MissCarriesCreations-BestiesBlogHopSM.jpgI began by cutting a piece of Sweet Girl paper at 2½” x 6″ for the Bookmark then used a Fancy Tags Thin Cut to partially cut the top and bottom shape. I used the same Thin Cut to create a small decorative piece for the top.

By creating a stencil from an image in the Flower Market collection, I was able to add some designs with Opaque Texture Paste to the background. Once the Texture Paste had dried, I shaded each image with Sugarplum Shimmer and randomly stamped a flower image from the To My Bestie stamp set with Charcoal Ink.

The rest was simple.  I stamped the “Besties” onto Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper, shaded them with Watercolor Pencils, and added their image and a sentiment to the bookmark. The tassel was created with some frayed Mink Twine and Sapphire Crochet Thread with a Gold Bow Charm from the Clearance Section of my website. MissCarriesCreations-BestiesBlogHopBookmarkI didn’t stop there.  If you are going to create a gift for your “Bestie”, you might as well create a small card to go with it, so I made this simple 3″ card using a piece of Sweet Girl paper and Pebble Cardstock. The images were stamped onto some color washed Watercolor Paper that was randomly stamped with Pebble colored flowers. They are very faint, but make a beautiful background for the sentiment.
MissCarriesCreations-BestiesBlogHopCard Simple, Sweet, and Ready to give as a gift to your “Bestie”.  Honesty, I think these would also make wonderful Mother’s Day Gifts.  I do suggest that you laminate them if you are planning to use them in a book.  That shimmer spreads on anything it touches.😁

Now ‘Hop” on over to Brenda Lapp’s blog to see her work! She always has something beautiful to inspire you. Be sure to visit all the Consultants at their blogs to get some great crafting tips and other fun ideas. Remember, the To My Bestie stamp set is only available until May 31st .  Contact your CTMH Consultant, or visit the Promotions tab of my website to see how you can get this stamp set for only $5.00.
