I never saw myself as a person who would enjoy “coloring”, but it is something I have become fond of especially when using our TriBlend Markers and Watercolors. For this month’s Technique Blog Hop, I chose to feature these two wonderful items on my Shaded Seashell card that I created for my husband.

I knew that I wanted to keep this card simple and easy to re-create, so I began designing a blue background on a piece of watercolor paper.  I swished paint onto the paper using a Flat Waterbrush, quickly dried it with my heat tool, then stamped some random “sand” along the base with Almond Ink.  I used that same “sand” image to create white sea foam.

After stamping the sentiment with Intense Black Ink, I adhered the watercolor paper to a card base, then framed it with a Stitched Glacier Rectangle. Now the fun can begin! After stamping the seashell images with Intense Black, I pulled out a my TriBlend Markers and a few Shimmer Brushes. I was delighted by the fact that each marker had ALL THREE shades I needed to create shadows and dimension – no extra thought needed

Once the sea shell images were shaded, I used a Wisteria Shimmer Brush to add a little color, applied a touch of Gold Shimmer to the Sand Dollar, and drew a few little highlights with a White Gel Pen.  The shells were attached to the card with Foam Tape and a few Rose Gold Sequins added. How simple is that?

Those TriBlends are some of my favorites to shade images with.  Each one comes with all three colors needed to shade and highlight your design.  Members of my VIP Group were able to watch a video showing how these NEW Markers work as they watched me use them to shade my Warm Wishes Card. To me, these are one of the better alcohol markers for crafters, like you and me, who wish create beautifully shaded images without breaking the bank.

Like I said, Gold is not something I use very often. Maybe the occasional Christmas card or anniversary gift, but not on my everyday color grid. I am more of a brassy, pewter girl. Today, I decided that it was high-time I explored some of our Gold products and this is what I came up with – a Simple Sand Dollar card.

Honestly, it turned out so much better than I had hoped. For my accent colors, I chose to use Almond and Peacock to reflect the Sea and Sand.♥  The Sand Dollar image was stamped using VersaMark™ Ink, then heat embossed with our Gold Tinsel Embossing Powder. (I have become fond of the texture that the Tinsel Embossing Powder brings to a project.)

After stamping the image, I used a Waterbrush with Almond Ink to shade the Sand Dollar. As I explored my Gold options, I realized that I could add a little Gold Shimmer to the center of the Sand Dollar.  Shimmer Brushes are one of my “must-have” tools.

Once the stamped image was complete, I cut out a Stencil and some Seaweed-like images from our Cricut Collections using my Air 2 machine™.  I used the Stencil to add some Texture Paste to my inked background, then layered the random plants, which were cut from Vellum and Gold Foil paper, onto the card.

FREEBIE ALERT:
The Design Space File™  I created includes the stencil and leaf images. It is free to anyone who links their project to this challenge & comments below with a link to their creation.

A few final touches of White & Gold Twine, Gold Glitter Gems, and some splashes of Gold Shimmer and it was ready to be layered onto the card base. I even took the time to finish off the inside of the card using the You Are My Sunshine stamp set. (The purchase of this stamp set helps to provide a SMILE through Operation Smile.)

I adore the textures, contrast of color, and the overall simplicity of this card.  I hope that it inspires you to join the Color My Heart Color Dare challenge this month.  All you have to do is upload your creation to our Facebook Page and we will link it to the blog. How easy is that?? AND you get a FREE Design Space™ file from me just for participating. (Don’t forget to comment below with a link to your creation.)

I can’t wait to see what you create!

Creating a Card for the Let’s Color It H2H Challenge

COLOR is defined as the ability add hue, lightness, or saturation using dye, stain or paint.  Are you ready to add some color to your projects? This month, for the Heart2Heart Challenge, we are asking you to show off your “coloring” skills and Color It using whatever medium that brings you joy.

There are so many ways to add color to a project, and as much as I would love to show you every single one, let me show you how to Color It using our Re-inkers. My card, Expect Miracles, was designed for a friend who has had quite a few waves hitting them lately; hence the use of seashells. I am planing to add Isaiah 43:2 to the inside.

WARNING: You are about to get messy. You are welcome to grab yourself a pile of gloves. As I sit here typing a day later, my hands are still blue from creating this card.

You will want to start by placing some drops of Re-inker onto an All Purpose Mat.  I chose to use various shades of blues and blue-greens.  Using a Spray Pen, mist the drops of ink allowing it to pool and spread.  I prefer to use Isopropyl Alcohol and a few drops of Clear Shimmer in my Spray Pen. The alcohol dries faster than water, and the shimmer adds a slight iridescence. I  was warned by my former-firefighter hubby not to use my heat gun to dry it.

Take a piece of Watercolor paper and drag it through the mess of ink. (This is where you might want some gloves.)  DO NOT USE CARDSTOCK.  You can see here, the first drag-through versus the second drag-through.  After the ink has dried completely, trim the paper to 5½” x 4¼” and begin stamping.  MissCarriesCreations-ExpectMiraclesCard-1stVS2nd

As I stated, since this card was about crashing waves, I chose to use our Beach Treasures stamp set. (This set can be purchased with or with out matching Thin Cut dies. Before I started stamping, I created some masks using Full Adhesive sticky notes.

Using VersaMark Ink, I stamped the images onto the background, added Gold Embossing Powder, and heat set the powder with a heat tool.  Make sure that you use the Anti-Static Pouch and save yourself a big mess of static nastiness.

Once the images are heat-set, you will begin REMOVING the color using a Waterbrush. Place a paper towel under your paper, and begin brushing water over the images. Don’t worry too much about staying in the lines. I found that as the ink ran over the edges, it created a beautiful shadow effect. I did, however, make sure to not remove too much ink where I wanted shadows to remain on the shells.

The effect is mesmerizing.  You can continue to go back and remove more ink if you need, just make sure to allow drying time between to see the effect. This card may have left me with some blue fingers, but I am overwhelmed with joy at the final result.
