Color is a powerful tool that can be used to create a specific mood or feeling on a scrapbook layout. Today, I have an excellent example of how important color can be to your projects. This design began with bright florals and pastel patterns that were given a more natural feel with neutral tones. Let me share with you how something as simple as color selection impacted the overall tone of this page.
This layout was created using components from the May Hip Kit. This collection is filled with lovely patterns and colors that are perfect for summer. As you can see, there is quite a variety of colors, so it was important to choose colors that aligned with the message I wanted to convey.
Pastel colors often give off a feeling of peace and softness. If I were aiming for a gentler mood, similar to what I achieved on this Sweet Father page, pastel colors would have been a great choice. However, for this particular page, I wanted to convey a sense of free spirit and energy that pastels just couldn’t capture.
Bright colors evoke a sense of liveliness, playfulness, and cheer. While the feeling of these fun florals was similar to the energy of this middle school girl, I needed to find a way to bring a serene emotion to the page.
For anyone who has ever aimed an arrow at a target, the moment is a blend of serenity and force. My goal was to convey that same sensation on this page. Using a mix of bright and pastel colors created an eye-catching combination full of energy.
To bring the outdoor, rustic feel to the page, I added neutrals. Neutral colors like white, beige, or gray create a natural atmosphere that brings sophistication to pastel hues.
Incorporating different textures with raw materials like the word florals, complemented the natural feel of the pastel colors. When you are creating, don’t discount the power of neutrals. They can create a cohesive look by tying together different design elements and often bring balance to a page.
In today’s tutorial, I share a few more ways that colors can create a sense of emotion as I show you how this page came together.
By understanding color and its effects on emotions, you can use color to your advantage in creating a mood or feeling that resonates with the memory you are documenting. While it’s important to have a color scheme in mind, don’t be afraid to try out different combinations and see what works best.
