If you’re like me, then you probably love to use sketches as a starting point for your scrapbook pages. I typically begin with a sketched design, modify it to suit my project, and finally end up with a finished product that is unique and hardly resembles the original sketch. Today’s video will showcase how I transformed a floral design into a fishing-themed page with a more masculine touch.
Each month, Dusty Attic has a sketch challenge for you to join and this month’s sketch is packed with photos making it the perfect design for these adorable fishing memories. Using sketches as a starting point for your scrapbook pages is a great way to jumpstart your creativity and get ideas flowing.
Don’t be afraid to modify the sketch to fit your needs. If the sketch has too many photos or elements, you can simplify it. If it doesn’t have enough, add more. In my design, I opted for fewer photos and rotated the two on the right-hand side of the page. The vertical orientation better suited the photos and offered me more options for layout.
You can also use different materials and techniques to make the sketch your own. The floral theme did not fit my photos, so I chose to use different papers, embellishments, and textures to add interest and dimension.
Most of the elements on this page were chipboard pieces from the Dusty Attic with a fishing theme. At the top of the page, I added a large mesh piece as an alternative to the pattern paper shown in the sketch. This would also be a great space to add some stenciling or texture paste.
On either side of the page, I added some chipboard fishing lures strung on some twine with rounded clothes pins. These are layered with some botanical pieces and woodgrain die cuts.
To give these a more realistic look, I painted the chipboard with Pops of Color and Nuvo dots. After the colors had dried, I shaded the edges and added a little white acrylic paint along the base of the piece.
When using Pops of Color, Nuvo dots, or other similar materials, it’s best to add an acrylic extender to the paints. These paints have a tendency to dry quickly, but by adding an extender, you’ll have more time to paint before it dries.
As you can see the placement of my embellishment cluster is similar to the sketch design. I found that the visual triangle of elements framed the photos well and created a nice balance on the page.
I also chose to keep the title in a similar location. The chipboard phrase I selected was much larger, leaving little room for journaling, so I will need to place my story in another location.
You don’t have to always stick to the arrangement of photos and embellishments. Sometimes, I rotate the sketch or flip it horizontally or vertically to fit my theme.

When using a scrapbook sketch, you may need to think outside the box. Scrapbooking is all about preserving memories and expressing your creativity, so don’t stress too much about getting everything perfect. Just enjoy the process and let your imagination run wild.
