Adding Detail to Chipboard Pieces

Recently I have shared quite a few pages that use chipboard elements and have shown you how add color to those pieces. In today’s video, I am going to share how to create chipboard pieces with detailed coloring.

The layout I created today records a renfest memory so I chose elements from the Dusty Attic and 49 & Market to create a fanciful page filled with florals. To add texture to this layout, I stenciled images onto the background using some ink and grit paste, then layered ephemera and florals over the top.

Most of my floral layers are single color images. In previous videos, I have shared how to pre your chipboard and add paint or spray to the pieces.

I created some additional floral layers with acetate leaves and rub-on transfers. Adding these images two a storybook die cut really added to the fanciful feel of this page.

On this design, I wanted to add detail to the larger florals. I wanted them to have a watercolor like look, but still have the chalklike finish of the distress oxide sprays.

Instead of using watercolor paints, I chose to paint these with distress oxide ink. I poured the liquid into a small paint palette and used a brush to add detail to the floral images.

The floral chippies from Dusty Attic have beautiful etched designs that I was able enhance with the darker ink. The colors blend together like watercolor, but have an opaque finish like oxides.

I also added detail to my title piece with ink and paint. To enhance the words, I added a layer of white paint to the chipboard, then added a layer of espresso ink with a paintbrush. Before the ink dried, I wiped it off with a towel.

The ink remained within the letters and created this lovely stained look on the chipboard. I added to that with a little ink around the edges.

In my tutorial, I share a few more ways that you can add detail to your chipboard pieces and share some tips as I assemble this layout.

The layout I created today records a memory of this couple at renfest.  The photo itself had very little color, which allowed me to choose a the hues for this design using distress oxide colors and chipboard.

I hope this project inspired you to try something new. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
