The Rules of Embellishment

I hate rules. They are completely against my nature, but I have learned that you need to “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” (Pablo Picasso) In today’s process video, I am going to share a few tips, or rules, to help you when you add embellishments to your pages.

This sweet page records the special relationship between our pup and her human. I chose to pair items from the Bramble Fox Dog collection with Simple Stories Pet Shoppe to create a more masculine feel on the page.

When I began to select the embellishments for this page, I was drawn immediately to the bright red title and wooden dog pieces. The red was a lovely complement to the teal behind the photos and the wood brought a natural element to the page.

As I create clusters, I begin with an anchor or a base. This grounds the items and creates a place to layer your pieces. At the top of the page, I used a heart die cut to match the frame around the photos.

Over the top of the heart, I added a complementing red circle and began layering elements around it. Behind the circle, I added two strips of pattern paper that mimic the colors of the phrases below the titles.

Repetition of color and shape connects the embellishment clusters together and creates cohesiveness in a layout. Throughout the page, there are colors, textures, and shapes repeated in each cluster.

Adding texture to your embellishment clusters creates flow on a page. Textural elements like twine, ribbon, fabric, wood, or lace also soften the clusters and lessen the box-like feel.

In my process video, I share some additional ways to add balance to your embellishment clusters and share how this page came together.

Although this page was a simple design, it is packed full of fun little embellishments.  Those little wood pieces and perspectives from the dog collection are so cute and are a perfect pairing with the pet shoppe items.

I hope that today’s project inspired you to try something new and help you to create beautiful embellishment clusters. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
