Create Balance with Color on a Layout

Using multiple colors on a layout can become overwhelming especially when you are mixing and matching collections. I have discovered that color wheels are a great tool to have for projects like this.

This collection from {Not} Just for Boys kit club contains a mix of Pink Fresh, Echo Park, and Simple Stories items. The colors are bright, playful, and perfect for a Disney layout.

When I began creating this page, I planned for an analogous color palette of green, blue, and yellow. The photo was taken at the Polynesian resort, and I wanted the colors to highlight the plants behind us in the photo.

To give this a fun floral feel, I added some flowers at the top and bottom of the page. These were cut from the Pet Shop pattern paper using a die in my collection.

When you are using a color wheel, an analogous color scheme consists of three hues, positioned next to each other on the wheel. As I was creating the page, I added some red patterns from the kit to give this a Disney feel.

The additional color changed the scheme into a split complementary design. When this happened, I became a bit disheveled as I tried to balance out all the colors I had added.

I decided to bring in a tag with all the colors in hopes that it would bring some cohesiveness to the design. As you will see in my video, it didn’t work as I planned, but I was able to get the page back on track and finish the page.

After making a few changes to the page, I brought in a lovely title with an acrylic shape and some puffy stickers. These two colors helped to bring all the elements together and created a bold statement on the page.

The photo was taken while we were resort hopping. This year, my husband was in a wheelchair so we opted to visit various resorts on the property instead of the parks.

In my video, I share how I was able to use the color wheel to make changes to my design. I also share how I used pocket cards and frames to create a background for my photo.

Even though I struggled a bit, I was able to go back to the basics of color theory to bring this page together.  Using a split complementary color palette allowed me to create a traditional theme park feel with florals to match the Polynesian theme.

I hope today’s project inspired you to try something new. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed below, feel free to leave me a comment.
