Finding Inspiration in Everyday Items

Have you ever had a photo you wanted to use and had no idea what to do with it? That is how I felt about this awesome photo of our son and daughter. There were so many bright colors with multiple focal points, and I didn’t know where to start.

In all honesty, I almost desaturated the photo, but the pink donut was part of the story, and it would not have looked very appetizing in black and white. As I searched my stash for inspiration, I just happened to find it on a little papersnip sheet.

All the colors I wanted to use were right there, plus a few cooler tones to offset the bright spring hues. You never know where you might find inspiration.

I replicated the striped pattern at the top of my page using gingham patterns. These have a monochromatic print on one side and a white pattern on the other, so I was able to get more use out of the strips I cut.

I brought more color into the background with stencils and acrylic shapes. Behind the photo, I stenciled in multi-color circles to mimic the donut sprinkles. To bring more pink to the design, I added an acrylic title and a few arrows to create flow on the page.

To balance out all the colors, I added some black elements. This contrasts well with the softer pastels and helps the photo stand out on the page.

I also used black on the floral piece I created. In the center, I stitched some lines with embroidery thread, added a large black center, and framed it with some black leaves.

In my process video, I share a few other ways this little paper snip inspired me and show you how this page came together.
