Mother-Daughter Memories with Mixed Media

Mixed media often scares many of my memory-keeping friends. The first words that come to mind are messy, multiple mediums, and mayhem. For those reasons, I avoided learning about this art form for many years. I recently discovered a way to incorporate mixed media onto my pages without the messy medium mayhem, and hope these insights inspire you to give this art form a try.

Mixed media has been around for centuries and is technically defined as “using a combination of materials.” Most creators use more than just paper on their projects, which qualifies that layout to be one of a mixed media design.

Vellum happens to be one of m favorite types of media to use for sentiments, florals, and photo frames. On this page, I used printed vellum to create a title for this design.

Stamping ink and stamped images are other mediums that I use frequently. I didn’t consider these as part of the mixed media realm, but, by definition they are.

My mother-daughter page includes a few stamped images that I created with simple black ink. To give the hearts a distressed look, I wiped off some of the ink before stamping the images.

I also used a lovely purple ink on my page and some modeling paste. If you are not a fan of stencils and paste, you can always give the inked background a try.

If you have viewed any of my past creations, you know that I love adding stitching. Again, the fact that this is considered part of the mixed media realm took me by surprise. Adding just a little zig-zag to a tab or die cut, is a simple way to add some texture to your page.

In my process video, I share a few more ways to add simple mixed media elements to your pages. I also explained how to balance colors using the gallon, quart, pint ratio.

Even though I still struggle a bit with the messier mixed media, I realized that I have been adding mixed media to my pages for quite some time. I didn’t need to fear the mess, the mediums, or the mayhem. I just needed to enjoy what I create.

I hope today’s project inspired you. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
