I recently ventured into the world of travel notebooks, and have discovered that there is a bit of a learning curve to using these. I do like the smaller size and how quickly the pages come together, but it is difficult to find balance. Today, I am going to share what I learned as I created these pages.
This notebook is the perfect size to record puppy memories and gave me an excuse to use up some of my craft collections. I am discovering that most of the products are designed for larger pages, which can make these smaller pages feel overcrowded.
One of the first lessons I learned was to create plenty of white space or unfilled space on the page. The title perspextive looks very large on this layout, so, to create some balance, I added additional open space on the opposite page.
I found that it was best to stick to a smaller color palette on this size layout. Mine has a cooler mix of blue, pink, and blue-green with a few neutrals added.
I know that I have said this before, but a repetition of elements is also helpful. On the left page, I added blue and pink winter items. These colors and shapes are repeated in the scarves and phrases on the opposite page.
Creating smaller clusters of embellishments is also helpful. On a larger page, you have room to create multiple layers of items, but those can quickly overwhelm a smaller layout.
The rule of threes, odd numbers, grounding elements, and visual triangles are all rules that still apply to smaller pages. These just needed to be scaled down and modified to fit the space.
In my process video, I share how this page came together and how I created balance on these smaller pages.
Traveler notebooks are the perfect size for those who have fewer photos and want a quick way to record memories. Creating these pages does take a little bit of restraint when adding elements, but a balance can easily be achieved.
I hope today’s project inspired you. If you have any questions about this design or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
