Last September, I created a sketch for 30DSCBL10, but there were a few hiccups with life that kept me from sharing my process video. We are currently enjoying another fun-filled vacation at the parks, so I wanted to celebrate by sharing a page I created of our last trip to Disney and show you how I choose the pattern papers for this layout.

Due to park restrictions, the cast members could not be approached for photos or autographs. Many of the characters were far in the background requiring me to find a way to bring attention to the focal point of the layout. The solution was a set of patterns that would lead your eye to the photo and bring out the character in the background.

I chose a primary color palette with the addition of pink for my page. The blue stripe leads your eye to the photo and brings out the blue in my husband’s shirt, while the bold red polka-dot frames the photo and leads the eye to Mary Poppins.
The addition of basic black and white brought in a horizontal element and helped break up the two bold patterns I selected for this page. The phrases are theme park related which is perfect for this page.

Behind the photo, I added two long vertical tags in softer hues. These patterns are muted and match the title and florals. Adding longer vertical pieces also helped to frame the page and lead the eye to the focal point of the layout.
There is also a repetition of patterns on this page. The grid pattern is similar to the check, the diagonal strip on the journal card matches the title, and dots are added to a few of the other elements on the layout.

To pull it all together, I added florals that matched the paper patterns. The larger ones were cut from a pattern paper I had in my scrap bin. The flowers behind the title are stickers and match the colors of the tag.
In my video, I share a few other tips for matching your pattern paper to your photo.
I modified the sketch I created to fit the smaller layout, but kept many elements the same like the location of the photo, the tag, layers of papers, stitching, and floral elements. I love the combination of of red, blue, yellow, and pink on this page and how to brings out the cast member in the background.
I hope today’s project inspired you to try something new. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies I listed above, please let me a comment.
