One of the more difficult tasks I face when scrapbooking is choosing the right paper for the page. If you are like me, you have a plethora of patterns and it can be overwhelming trying to select the perfect piece. In today’s video, I am going to share how I select patterns for my pages and share some simple tips that you can use on your next layout.
This photo is one of my fall favorites filled with rusty orange and golden hues. When I was selecting the background pattern, I wanted to choose a subtle design that would match the feel of the photo. On the dress, there is a bit of embroidery and the multi-color leaves matched that beautifully.
To the left of the photo, I knew that I would be layering some leaves and florals so I needed to choose a pattern that would help these standout. My first thought was to bring in a rusty orange pattern, but instead, I selected a floral blue that contrasted with the orange in the photo and allowed the layers to stand out.
I placed a small yellow strip of pattern paper behind the photo next to the blue to bring in some golden hues. This brought out the lovely fall colors in the photo and created a visual triangle with the title. I also brought in the orange, red, and blue colors to the title with leaves and a papersnip barn image. This helped create a cohesive look.
To bring in some texture, I created a brick pattern behind the photo with modeling paste. This created another layer of separation between the busy pattern paper and the photo without adding another layer of color.
Throughout the page, I repeat the patterns and colors from the papers I selected into the clusters of leaves and balanced the sizes and shapes within the clusters.
Using elements of different textures is also a great way to create balance in your clusters. On this page, I mixed paper die cuts with gold foiling and acrylic perspectives to create contrast.

I love how this page gives the feeling of leaves flowing across the page and highlights this lovely photo. The mix of paper die-cut leaves with printed elements scattered on the page with acrylic shapes gives this page such a warm feeling.
