Occasionally, I enjoy using mixed media on my layouts, but I struggle with the unpredictability of creating splatters. Today, I am sharing a winter scrapbook page created of a dog in a sweet little holiday sweater as I show you a simple way to create splatters on a page.

This project was created using the ‘Tis the Season kit from {Not} Just for Boys kit club to record a winter memory. I selected a white woodgrain for the background and added a sweater pattern at the base to match the theme of the layout.

Using snowfall texture paste, I stenciled snowflake images onto the pattern paper. I wanted a subtle pattern that wouldn’t take away from the rest of the design.
The snowflakes were designed to peek out from behind the photo and title. To add to the mixed-media look, I wanted to create some splatter patterns.

Creating splatters is often a struggle because I don’t get the result that I want. Instead of trying to create big splatters on this page, I chose to use a splatter stamp set. Not only did I get the results I wanted, but I was also able to control the location of the spatters and create the look I wanted on the design.
Many companies have some form of paint swish or splatter pattern stamps. If you like the look of the splatter but want to have a little control of the pattern, then stamps might be a great option for you.

At the top of the layout, I paired a sticker phrase with an acrylic saying to build a title. This helps tell the story of how the two of them need to wear sweaters all through the house in December.
In the photo, there is a Christmas tree in the background so I selected a small acrylic tree for the title in a pattern that matched the dog’s sweater.

To match the winter theme, I attached a wooden sweater near the photo and layered it with some snow-capped trees and a December tag. At the top of the tag, I created a velvet ribbon bow to bring some red to that part of the page.
In my process video, I share some tips to help you create this layout using splatter stamps and texture paste.
The ‘Tis the Season kit is filled with holiday elements that are perfect for your Christmas pages. I chose to pair it with some a la carte items to create a page that tells the story of our daughter in her chilly little farmhouse. I love how her dog is also wearing a sweater in this photo.
I hope that this project inspired you to use some of your stamps. If you have any questions about the project or the supplies I listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
