Authentic Thanksgiving Memories

This past month, a few people informed me that they don’t scrapbook or share their layouts because they don’t have photos that look “good enough.”  One mentioned that her kids are usually in messy clothes or there is a pile of laundry in the background. Today, I am going to share a layout using a photo of our kids just as they are.

SUPPLIES | NJFB Naturalist Kit, Fall Wreath Cardstock Cut, Mixed Media Paper, School bus Yellow Pearls, Rusty Hinge Ink, Aged Mahogony Ink, Vintage Photo Ink, Beach Glass Shimmerz, Bahama Mama Shimmerz, Dandy Lion Shimmerz, Spray Bottle, Cross Stencil, Opaque Texture Paste, Pink Waterbrush, Waterbrush, Letter Ruler, Foam Dots, Bearly Art Glue, Glassboard (Save 20% with Carrie20), Photo Printer, Sewing Machine

I am the type of mom who often forgets to snag a photo at holidays or big events. This one was snagged right before the kids headed out the door. Due to the number of spiderwebs and objects on the porch, I chose to print this in black and white so that your focus was on their faces.

The title I chose is a combination of die cuts, puffy letters, and ephemera from the NJFB Naturalist kit. The combination of colors and textures gave this a nice fall feel and helps to tell the story behind the photo.

At the top of the page, I added some colorful leaf patterns tucked behind the torn edge of mixed media paper. The area where the two meet is at about the same height as all the faces in the photo which, again, keeps your focus off the pet hair-covered shirt and mismatched socked feet.

I also added some banners and tags near the top of the photo to give your eye a starting point. That bit of yellow is repeated in the title to draw your eye diagonally across the page.

As you know, I love adding lots of layers to my projects. On this page, I layered a fall wreath cardstock cut that I shaded with Distress Oxides and Shimmerz paints on the left side of the page.

The weight of these leaves creates a large frame around the photo and helps to balance out the title on the other side of the layout.

In my process video, I share a few tips for creating this layout and tell you more about this photo.

This page was created to record Thanksgiving memories.  Even though I wasn’t able to capture more photos that day, this shows a snapshot of the people who were there and gives me a place to record my thoughts about the day.

I hope that this gave you a few ideas for using this new October kit from {Not} Just for Boys Kit Club and inspired you to try something new.  If you have any questions about the project or the supplies listed below, feel free to post that in the comments.
