Use Pattern Paper as Embellishments

Fall colors have always been a favorite of mine so you can imagine my excitement when the new kits arrived from {Not} Just for Boys Kit Club. After our daughter announced her engagement, they had photos taken with lovely autumn colors and this kit had the perfect components to record this memory.

The vintage background paper in this kit had some lovely leaves that I wanted to use, but my photos were going to hide the images. My solution was to use my craft knife and cut around the images so that I could use them as part of my layers.

I also cut apart the floral print. This has a lovely golden color but was a bit too busy for my page, so I used it to create floral clusters instead.

This is a great way to use those large floral patterns in your collection. Many floral prints might overwhelm a page if used as is, but you can easily cut them apart and use them like die cuts.

If you are not a fan of fussy cutting, I want to let you know that this was an easy pattern to carve out. I didn’t get all the details and cut off a few of the petals and leaves, but you would never know because so many of the flowers overlap.

To add more dimension and texture, I added a leaf cardstock cut which was shaded with watercolor paints. Tucking the skeleton leaves within the pattern paper leaves, gave me some amazing layers and create a subtle frame around my photos.

With all those lovely layers and patterns, I didn’t need to add too many embellishments. I kept it simple with a few leaf stickers, butterflies, and wood buttons.

The wooden buttons in the Auburn Autumn Days kit matched her dress perfectly so I sprinkled them throughout the page. I placed the largest button near the title and added jute for texture.

That title came from the kit’s ephemera pack and, at first, I was worried that it was too small for the layout. After adding a label, leaf, tab, and button nearby, I was able to make it stand out more.

If you would like to see how this page came together, I have a short process video for you.

The Auburn Autumn kit has so many great patterns that I was able to use as embellishments on my page. The leaf layers in the background paper paired with the floral cuts were perfect additions to this page.
