If you have viewed my online classes or videos, you know my struggle with mixed media. I love how it looks and I am in awe of those talented enough to use it, but I stumble over its unpredictability. This week, I decided to simplify the process and create the look of mixed media with stencils.
This masculine page is a simple one you can recreate using stencils, stickers, and acrylic pieces. I wanted the burlap pattern background to be simple with some splashes of color, but I didn’t want to ruin the page, so I reached for a few of my stencils.
I created a simple trail of texture paste using a pattern stencil leading from the title to the edge of the page. Crypt paste has a grit texture with a mix of stone coloring in it so it was a great addition to this outdoor layout.
At the top corner, I wanted a drip of paint, but I feared making a mess. Instead of having a panic attack, I layered two stencils to create the look.
The first stencil was a coffee ring image with splatters. This gave me the circle image and a few purposeful splatter blots. I layered a paint swish stencil over it to create the drip of paint.
To make it look less stencil-like, I added a small amount of organic spatters to the area. This gave me a little more confidence to add some more to my page.
To bring in some more texture, I tucked some of the crypt paste under the row of flair. These were created using epoxy stickers over PaperSnips and outdoor stickers.
In my video, I share a few more ways to create the look of mixed media and I show how to assemble the flair buttons.
This page has a great masculine feel with the grit paste and paint splatters. Using stencils made it easy to create. Now, that I’ve gotten my toes wet, I am going to start experimenting a little more and I’ll share what I learn with you.
