Vintage cards are some of my favorites to make, and I love showing how to mix different elements to make a beautiful design like this one. Today, I have a simple mixed media project for you to try where texture paste and vellum create an old-world broken brick background.
Before I explain how to create the vellum background and share my video tutorial, let me tell you more about this project.
I wanted to keep this design simple, so I chose a beautiful layered rose from Honey Bee Stamps which I cut from pattern paper and cardstock. I love how all those layers come together with the vintage-type paper and bits of string in the center.
This rose has quite a few layers to it, and you might be worried that you won’t be able to figure out how to put it together. Thank goodness Honey Bee Stamps has great diagrams available. I just printed one from the website and adhered it to the back of my magnet sheet, which I refer to every time I use the dies.

I chose pattern papers to create my rose to give it a vintage vibe and old-world feel. The My Type papers and ephemera pack were perfect for this design and made my vintage-loving heart happy.
I kept the sentiment simple using a die-cut from the My Type collection. I didn’t want the sentiment to take away from other elements on the card, and I like how it adds a little bit of whimsy with that little red acrylic heart that matches the other red hearts on the rose.
The broken brick background was created with texture paste and vellum. Before I applied the texture paste, I added an adhesive sheet to the back of the vellum, which allowed me to adhere the entire piece of vellum to the card base without the adhesive showing.
Anytime you add a water-based medium to the vellum, it will curl up. The adhesive sheet adds more weight to the vellum to prevent it from curling too much when I apply the texture paste. It did curl slightly, as you will see in the video, but I gave you a few tips to help with that.
When the vellum was added to the red background, it gave it a beautiful worn-down look, and that vellum allowed some of the red to show through the brick. I just love how this looks paired with that script washi tape.

This valentine card has a wonderful mix of textures and patterns, and I love how that brick background on the vellum pulls it all together with the vintage script washi tape. The rose is full of layers, which I adore, and that little bit of thread give a great contrast to the design.
