Do you have a Christmas tradition that you enjoy every year? One of our family customs is a trip to Estes Park to watch the Parade of Lights. In the year 2019, we were blessed with a blanket of snow so I was able to take a few photos of the Rockies during the trip.
This two-page winter layout was created for the 12 Days of Christmas Inspiration YouTube hop. Today’s theme is Ring in the Lights, and I felt like these photos were perfect for this challenge.
The inspiration for these pages came from a winter wonderland mood board posted on the Scrapbook & Cards Today blog. I love the natural elements of the trees, pinecones, and deer mixed with little pops of color.
After gathering my papers, ephemera, and a few photos, I began planning a scheme for my layout. With so much snow on the ground, we were required to “bundle up” most of the day in Estes.
That is why I chose the title that I did for the layout. Rarely do we have snow the day at the lights parade, so I wanted to make sure that I documented how cold it was that year.
I also added quite a few snowflakes on my page in the form of die cuts, stickers, and stenciled images.
It’s very subtle and hard to see in the photos, but I did add some textured snowflakes onto the woodgrain paper in the background using a snowflake stencil and transparent matte texture paste. I love that soft pop of dimension.
Using neutral tones allowed me to add a few pops of color to the page with a few 6×6 pattern papers. Even though these were from a dog collection, they went perfectly with the layout.
I chose deep primaries in red and blue to match the cool river and bright blue skies and the bright lights shining on my family’s faces during the parade.
For me, this two-page layout tells a story even though the photos don’t seem to go together. It starts with the trip up the mountains and ends with an evening together.
Being able to create a cohesive spread required the repetitive use of many elements like the snowflakes, trees, and pinecones. By keeping most of the tones natural and placing the elements in a triangle form, I can draw your eyes across the page to read the details of the story.
