Week Four: Wild Card Wood Tags with HTV

Have you been enjoying this month’s Love Your Stash challenge? Our Creative Design Team has been using up items in our craft room stash and there have been some amazing ideas so far. So far we have tackled paper, pocket cards, embellishments, & kits. We even added a few Guest Designers to the challenges. This week, our theme is Wild Card which meant that there were no rules to follow (like I would have followed them anyway).

A Wild Card challenge meant that I could dig into every area of my craft space. My first visit was the drawer full of unfinished holiday home décor where I found some little wooden Christmas tags. I know I am not the only one who does this – I have grand plans to make holiday pieces in November, then the holidays come (or a virus hits), and you end up shoving the project in a black hole of UFOs.

Well, this girl decided that she wasn’t going to wait until Christmas to use up those little tags. I snatched them out of the drawer, warmed up my Cricut, dug out the old paint and beads, and ended up with a fun little spring décor project.

As I said, this project began with some wooden tags I purchased last year with grand plans to make some holiday gifts. I wish we carried these all year long so that I could make a few more, but I am betting that quite a few of you also grabbed some last year and have some in your UnFinished Objects bin.

I was inspired by the tags and tag garlands I have seen featured in home décor this past year. Wooden Tiered Trays have been so popular and you often see these tags draping from those trays or hanging from hooks or curtains.  Before I share more of the little details on these tags with you, take a few minutes to watch the video tutorial I created showing you how to use your wooden tags, a Cricut machine, and some items from your stash to make yourself some spring decorations.

Don’t forget to subscribe so that you are notified when I add next month’s Easter collab video to my channel.

In the tutorial, I share how I decorated each one of these tags using paint, reinkers, paper, HTV iron-on, and embellishments from my stash. The video also shows you how to Upload SVGs into Cricut Design Space so that you can cut out the images of those tags from paper.

On this little Peeps Tag, I also used an SVG images from our Bunny Banner that was available last spring. Those bunny images were the perfect “peep” shape. My original plan was to cut them from pastels, but my home is not conducive to pale colors, so I chose to cut them from a grey patterned iron-on instead.

The rest of the tag was decorated very simply. I added some polka-dot cork shapes to the faces, an iron-on sentiment, some white wooden beads, and a tassel. (Make sure you watch the video to see my tip for painting beads.)

The second bunny tag is just too cute with its wood grain background, pink plaid bunny, and little tag collar. I used the Tag SVG to cut out the perfect tag shape from our white wood grain paper, then added an iron-on sentiment and a three-dimensional bunny cut from our valentine paper.

To make the bunny three-dimensional, I cut the image from cardstock multiple times and adhered all the layers together. When you are creating home décor pieces, this method looks much better than using foam tape and it holds up to being moved around each season.

This third tag is my favorite and matches my home décor perfectly. The embellishments are a bit unconventional – like a photo tab for a collar – but they are the perfect additions to that adorable iron-on bunny image. I am guessing you probably have a few of those metal tabs in your stash, too, and now you are looking at them in a whole new way.

The fourth and final tag in the video is a surprise addition, and to be honest, it was not a favorite of mine. I didn’t even take the time to snap a photo of it because I just keep trying to “fix it”. I know that sounds silly, but sometimes the project doesn’t feel finished, and that little blue flower tag needs a few finishing touches.

I hope that this inspired you to Love Your Stash and dig through your bin of unfinished home décor items to create something for spring. Make sure to visit all of the Creative Design Team’s channels so that you can get some more ideas for using up your craft stash during the month of February.

I hope this inspired you to try something new. If you have any questions about this project or the supplies listed above, feel free to leave me a comment.
