A Sketch to Make a Farmhouse Sunflower Card

It’s been a while since I have joined the Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge, and, since life has been a bit busy, I decided to use this week’s sketch to quickly create a Thank You card.   My daughter is a huge fan of sunflowers and recently moved to a small farmhouse, so I decided to combine the two to create a Farmhouse Sunflower card.  Before I show you my project, let’s take a look at this week’s sketch.

I always enjoy the simplicity of the Atlantic Hearts sketches. They give plenty of detail with room for interpretation and creative additions.  I chose to create a card similar to the sketch using our new Joyful Sunflower stamp with a few additions from our Timber collection.

The base of the card was designed with a White Daisy stitched rectangle frame atop some wood-grain paper. If you hadn’t guessed by most of my photo backdrops, I adore the look of wood-grain and I especially love the rich tones on this Timber paper.

To match the farmhouse theme, I grabbed a checked tab from the Timber sticker sheet and stamped the sentiment in Espresso ink.  Black and White checks are everywhere right now in farmhouse decor and this tab felt like the perfect addition.

The sunflower was stamped onto some white cardstock using our Espresso Pigment ink so that I could heat-emboss it with Clear Embossing powder. At the time, I had planned on shading the image with watercolors, but, once it was stamped, I decided to leave it as is.  All those details in the sunflower stand out so strongly with the raised embossing and nothing more is needed.

I used the thin cuts dies to cut out the sunflower then placed it onto some white cardstock speckled with Toffee Shimmer.   In the sketch, the sentiment sits below the image, but, since I placed mine on the side with a tab, I decided to add some zig-zag stitching using our Gold Embellishing Thread across the base of the image.

For such a simple design, I feel like it turned out absolutely beautiful and it helped with the heartache of missing my daughter this week.

I hope that you enjoyed today’s Farmhouse Sunflower card project and that you were inspired to try something new and join me at the Atlantic Hearts Sketch challenge.  I will be showing a version of this card during my Virtual Crop next weekend and show what it would look like if I had added the watercolors.  If you wish to join the crop, click on the events tab above, then click on the link in the calendar.

  2. Gorgeous card! I love the look of that rich wood grain background with the black and white. Stitching was the perfect addition to complete that element of the sketch. Thank you for joining us at AHSC this week.
